If you or your business handles chemicals or products that contain chemicals, it is important to pay attention to the requirements put in place for GHS Labels. GHS (Globally Harmonized System of Classification) is a standardized classification and labeling system for all companies, businesses, or individuals needing to label or purchase chemical products. The GHS is an international system originally created by the United Nations, and officially adopted in the United States in 2012 by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
It is very important for people labeling chemicals or chemical products to have the necessary knowledge of the chemical they are handling and how to label it. There are six requirements of GHS Labels:
The first three items on the list above are standardized label elements – these must be exact according to the regulations provided by GHS and should be listed together on the label. Standardization makes labeling easy to understand and warning information unified.
The signal word is the first required element of a GHS compliant label. The signal word should be prominently on the label and state how hazardous a particular substance is. The word “Danger” should be used for severe hazard, and the word “Warning” should be used for a less severe hazard. Note that these are the only two classifications used and accepted by the GHS.
The second element of a GHS label is the GHS Symbols, which are commonly referred to as hazard pictograms. These standardized symbols help group chemicals with similar risk types. An example of this would be using the flammable pictogram for chemicals that are flammable. There are nine symbols that can be used. Click here to view all the GHS symbols.
A hazard statement is a written statement describes the kind of hazard and the severity of the hazard. These phrases are standardized by the GHS.
The manufacturer information lists things like the supplier or manufacturing company’s name, address, contact information, etc.
Precautionary statements coincide with GHS hazard statements. Precautionary statements break down the preventative, response, disposal, and storage steps that should be taken to make sure a hazardous material does not become a danger to anyone handling it.
