Food & Beverage Tamper-Evident Labels

If you have ever used a popular food delivery service like DoorDash, Grubhub or Uber Eats, you are probably familiar with tamper-evident labels and seals. You may have also seen these tamper-evident labels if you have ever taken out food from a restaurant. These labels are commonly used with food & drink containers, and usually feature a bright color to ensure they stand out.

With the growth of third-party delivery services like DoorDash, Grubhub and Uber Eats, tamper-evident labels have taken a more prominent role in the restaurant industry. Here are a few things to keep in mind when purchasing or using these labels.

What is a Tamper-Evident Label?

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) defines a tamper-evident label or seal as, “having one or more indictors or barriers to entry which, if breached or missing, can reasonably be expected to provide visible evidence to consumers that tampering has occurred.” The FDA goes to on explain that the indicator or barrier must be “distinctive by design”, meaning that the material used to manufacture tamper-evident labels is not readily available to the public.

How to Tell if Your Food or Drink has Been Tampered With

Although tamper-evident labels for food and drinks may vary depending on the manufacturer, they all should share common elements that will help you notice if your food or drink has been tampered with. The easiest way to check, is to look for the security cuts or slits on the label. These are small cuts on the surface of the label – they will tear if someone tries to open the container. If this happens, it will be obvious and easy to see.

Is Anything Written on Tamper-Evident Labels?

This can vary depending on who manufactures the label. Most tamper-evident labels for food and drink will include a safety message, “Sealed For Your Safety”. Some may also include a company logo, website address, handling instructions, date & time the food was packaged, and other customized information.

What is the Key Benefit of Tamper-Evident Labels?

Tamper-evident labels benefit restaurants who purchase the labels, and customers who receive the food or drink package with the label. The labels give a sense of safety and peace of mind for both parties.
